Air unit leader Keith (a surprisingly non-threatening name for an air unit leader) takes a team of pilots to the planet Arus to find Voltron, the ultimate force of justice in the universe. Not so fast, says the evil King Zarkon. It's on, baby.
Princess Allura has a dysfunctional family. As you've already seen, her mom and dad are ghosts. Her Aunt Orla is a real piece of work, too. Shortly after Orla's visit, bad things start happening in the castle. Another Haggar trick? Good guess.
A slave, Jai, escapes from Zarkon's empire and makes his way to Arus. In a plea that would strike a chord in any self-respecting defender of the universe, he asks Voltron Force to free his planet. Voltron attacks on Zarkon's birthday. True story.

Fun Stuff

Trivia:
Voltron was not a straight dub from the Japanese anime due to American broadcast standards. One of the most noticeable differences involves the character Sven. In the Japanese version, Sven died after battling Haggar in episode 6. In the American version Sven was seriously injured and left to heal. He returns near the end of the series. In the Japanese version, this was his brother at the end of the series. more
Goofs:
Continuity: In order to activate the lions, each team member had to insert a special key. In many instances when Keith is starting the Voltron forming sequence, his key can still be seen on his tunic, but then is also seen on the panel of his lion. more
Quotes:
[checklist for forming Voltron]
Keith: Ready to form Voltron! Activate interlocks! Dyna-therms connected. Infra-cells up; mega-thrusters are go!
Keith: Let's go, Voltron Force!

An underrated cartoon that is fun to watch, 24 March 2001
Author: 4-Kane from Arlington, MA

I was only 12 years old when this show began, but I can't remember what motivated me to watch it. However, I enjoyed watching it, and seeing it on the Cartoon Network a few years ago brought back a lot of memories. This show consisted of two Voltrons: one that is merged via robotic lions, while the other is formed by means of giant motor vehicles (planes, cars, and what have you). But in each episode, you only see one Voltron or the other. It's a fun cartoon to watch, but it's incredible that it managed to get away with killing a lot of characters. I think Voltron is one of the most underrated cartoons, and I'm not afraid to admit that. If you like animated adventures, I strongly recommend watching Voltron.
